A breast lift (mastopexy) can be combined with a breast augmentation in patients looking to correct both a droopy breast and increase their breast size. This is a purely aesthetic procedure and therefore not covered by the RAMQ. The lift procedure will returns the breast to its youthful shape and position on the chest wall while the augmentation will increase the breast size. The augmentation can be performed either using implants (see implant augmentation) or using your own fat (see fat grafting augmentation).
Good candidates for this procedure are patients who meet the following criteria:
- Healthy weight
- No significant medical problems
- Non smokers
- Not on blood thinners
- Droopy breasts
- Want to increase the size of their breasts
Poor candidates for this procedure include patients with the following risk factors:
- Significant medical problems
- Taking blood thinners
- Massive weight loss patients
- Multiple previous breast surgeries
The breast lift scar depends on how much skin needs to be removed and can be around the areola only, a lollipop incision or an anchor incision (left to right). This same incision is used to insert the breast implant.
Recovery from a breast lift/augmentation generally consists of two days of pain requiring medication, two weeks for the skin to heal, two months for the breasts to settle and two years for the scars to fade. Time off work ranges between 2-4 weeks.
