Botox is product that gets its name from the bacteria from which it is derived called botulism. The toxin from this bacteria is injected in minute quantities into selected facial muscles in order to achieve paralysis and eliminate dynamic facial wrinkles (wrinkles caused by movement of the face). It can also be used to lift the lateral eyebrow as well as decrease bands in the neck. Botox takes effect 3-4 days after it is injected and can last 4-6 months.
Botox is used for a variety of medical problems including spasms of the face and neck, migraine headaches, overactive bladder, lazy eye, excessive sweating and many more. It has been extensively studied and is safe when performed by a trained and experienced medical professional.
