Nipple reconstruction is done under local anesthetic (freezing) and takes about 20 minutes. This is usually done a few months after the breast is reconstructed to give some time for the skin to settle. There are different kinds of nipple reconstructions including nipple share (from the other side), local skin flaps or tattooing of the nipple with the areola. After nipple reconstruction, patients are asked to wait 2-3 months before proceeding with areolar tattooing
If there is a remaining nipple that is large enough, half of it can be taken and placed on the reconstructed breast. This allows for a very natural nipple.
